The Veracious Truth About Tithing You've Never Heard

The Veracious and Accurate Truth About Tithing

The Biblical Truth About Tithing

When a certain bishop in my country, whom I admire, gave his input about Tithing, it left a sour taste in my mouth because I believe he’s a Bible scholar and as such should have presented a more extensive and accurate interpretation on such a sensitive issue. I want to also reiterate that I have no personal grouse against tithing. I just want the truth to be espoused.
In order for us to understand the purpose for the legal creation of tithes by God, we’ll have to turn to the book of Numbers. The reason I used the term “legal creation” is because of the following reasons:
1: The ancient Israelites operated a system of government known as Theocracy. In Theocracy, people are governed by religious leaders who are guided divinely by God.
2: As a result, God himself decreed the payment of tithes as part of  the Civic responsibility of the ancient Israelites in accordance with the legal rules and regulations( The Law) He instituted through Moses under the old covenant.
The book of Numbers tells us lucidly, the purpose for the creation of tithes. Let’s read it together in Numbers 18:21 “As for the tribe of Levi, your relatives, I will pay them for their service in the Tabernacle with the tithes from the entire land of Israel”. You can read the whole chapter to get the full context of that chapter.
The Bishop’s statement about tithing is inaccurate because of the following reasons based on evidences from the old and new testaments which are:
1: Tithes were meant to cater to the needs of the Levites, who as a result of their priesthood had no inheritance among their brethren, the Israelites.
2: It was an old covenant decree, instituted for only the children of Israel under the law.  The old covenant was between God and Israel.
3: In Numbers 18:26, the Levites were even ordered to give one-tenth of the tithes they received to the priests (the sons of Aaron). Therefore, if tithing is mandatory today, whom will pastors pay their tithes to, in accordance with the decree given in the Bible verse I relayed?
4: In Deuteronomy 26:12, there was a decree that every third year, the Israelites were to pay a tithe meant only for widows, orphans and foreigners. How many churches, which proclaim mandatory tithing obey this command today?. Any pastor who believes in tithing must also obey this part of the command but only very few, if none, do.
5: According to Malachi 3:9, disobedience of the tithing decree could incur the curse  of God. This was addressed to the ancient Israelites under the old covenant.
6: Under the new covenant (between God and Christians ) we are no longer under any curse of God because of Christ’s death at the cross, according to Galatians 3:13.
7: The apostles didn’t pay tithes  and the early Christians weren’t mandated to pay any tithes.
8: Lastly, when apostle Paul gave instructions concerning financial giving, he didn’t include or mention tithing (2 Corinthians chapter 8). Remember, he was a former Pharisee(Philippians 3:5) and as such he had full knowledge of the law. Therefore, if he believed that tithing was mandatory for Christians he would have commanded the Christians of his church to practice it in order to avoid  the curse of God.
In conclusion, tithing isn’t mandatory for Christians. There’s no curse from God if you don’t pay tithes. No man of God is infallible, only God is. It’s very important, though, that we give but according to our capabilities and as we are led by the Holy Spirit.
