Welcome to today's continuation of our ongoing discuss "The Prodigal Son And The Church". I hope yesterday's topic was enlightening and enjoyable. Please if there are complains and contributions you want to add to this blog, please feel free to comment. There is a comment page on my blog. In my last post we discussed the story of the prodigal son and its correlation to the church. We discovered that the prodigal son could be compared to christians who are not totally committed to God and his service in his kingdom on earth(the church). Today we will be discussing some more truths on this topic (if you read my last post this will not be confusing to you). So without wasting any more time lets delve into today's post but before we continue I want to bring to our notice some truths(which can be applicable to a prodigal son type of christian today) about this beautiful story. Lets pray to the Holy Spirit for more understanding for some minutes before we begin please. Lets begin our discuss by sharing these truths:
- The prodigal son was greedy and wicked for asking for his share when his father had not even died. In ancient Israel a child was only authorized to ask for his inheritance after the death of his father. So one could conclude that this prodigal son had been hoping his father would die soon.
- He went to a far country:If he had been closer to home he wouldn't have suffered the way he did. Correlating his actions with christians today, one can deduce that no matter how many times a christian falls and makes mistakes, such christian should never give up on God or stop going to church or lose interest in kingdom work. Such christian should grow in the knowledge of God and work with the Holy Ghost.
- The prodigal son wasted his inheritance. He couldn't even invest it which would have been better for him.
- A severe famine occurred in the the land after he had spent all he had. So if the famine had occurred before the exhaustion of his possessions he wouldn't have suffered. Spiritually, this tells us that the devil takes advantage of our lust and greed at the time we least expect to harm us.
- The prodigal son ate swine food which was an abomination in jewish culture in those days. This also can be applicable to some christians today who after experiencing the love and joy of God go back to their old ways and vomit because of greed and lust. E.g imagine a christian lady selling her body for money(or doing runs as it is known in my country) or christian guy stealing and womanising. Such christians are committing abominations because this acts should only be found among sinners and unbelievers and not among sanctified people like us(christians).
- The prodigal son came to his senses(self realization). He did not wait for his father to look for him. In application to christians today(prodigal son type of christians), even when we make grave mistakes or fall back, We must come to our senses and run back to our father God before it is too late.If that prodigal son had delayed, he would have died of starvation.
- He considered himself unworthy to be called his father's son i.e he returned to his father in humility. So as christians we must humble ourselves before God whenever we make mistakes and ask for forgiveness and grow up.
- His father had been very worried due to the absence of his son. When the prodigal son was coming back his father ran to meet him and hugged him, showing how much he had missed him. In application to some christians today whenever we leave God and go back to the world, God is so unhappy because you become exposed to the evil schemes of the devil. God becomes very worried about such christians and does all He can to get them back.
- His father restored the prodigal son to his position as His son by putting a beautiful robe on him, a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet which was how sons of rich and influential fathers dressed in ancient Israel. In application to today's church whenever we return back to God after making mistakes, God cleanses us with the blood of his son Jesus,to sanctify us back to him(there is a deeper understanding of this which I will be explaining on my post on "sin")
- His father celebrated his son's return. Whenever we as christians return back to God in humility, there is celebration in heaven. God is so happy. If only we could imagine the joy God has to know we are his children, many christians will never think of allowing their greed and lust to drive them from God's presence (this can also be applicable to when an unbeliever gives his/her life to christ).
- The prodigal son collected his share of his father's inheritance. Many christians suffer in these in aspect. Unlike the prodigal son who was even aware he had an inheritance, many christians are not even aware of their rights and inheritance in God while even on earth. As christians we must be aware and claim our inheritance and rights in God in humility in order to flourish and prosper this on earth.
Lastly, if you notice what the elder brother said when his father prepared a feast for the prodigal son in Luke 15:29,you will notice that the father had never prepared a feast for any of them before(remember my guidelines for reading the bible). In application to the church today, this tells us that sometimes while serving God it might seem that there is no reward or results for your service to your father Jehovah Elohim but don't worry He is watching you, He is not blind, He will reward you(the committed Christian) in His time. Please do not give up. God is a God of answers and He is a rewarder of those that patiently seek and serve him. Do not allow your flesh and lusts to rule you instead walk in the Spirit.
I will stop here for today. In subsequent and in any of the upcoming posts we will be discussing the elder brother type of Christian and we will continue our discussion on sin. I will be expecting you. Please if you have not given your life to Christ say with your mouth and believe these words in your heart: Lord Jesus come into my life today. I accept you as my Lord and savior today. I believe that you died for my sins and rose for my justification and you are seated at God's right hand as the son of God. Thank you for what you have done. Amen.
If you said these words you are now a member of Christ's family. I welcome you into God's family.
